Positioning for an Emerging Brand
about.
Fluent Lighting is an emerging architectural lighting company built around a deceptively simple idea: designers shouldn't have to choose between how a luminaire looks, performs, and feels within a space.
Working directly with Fluent's founder, I shape how that idea becomes a marketable brand from product positioning and messaging to launch strategy, visual direction, social content, sales tools, and digital experiences.
Because the company is still growing, the work isn't about executing within an established marketing system. It's about helping build the system, the voice, and the product story at the same time, identifying what makes Fluent meaningfully different and translating that differentiation into a brand designers can understand and remember.

challenge.
Architectural lighting is an established and highly visual market. Beautiful product photography and polished design aren't enough to create meaningful differentiation when customers have hundreds of fixtures competing for the same specification.
The challenge was to get underneath the aesthetics and answer a more important question:
Why would a lighting designer choose Fluent?
That meant looking closely at the products themselves. Not simply what they looked like, but how designers could use them, how the light was experienced, what flexibility they offered, and what made those characteristics valuable within an architectural space.
Through that work, a clearer positioning framework began to emerge around three interconnected concepts:
Comfort. Performance. Aesthetics.
Rather than treating those as competing priorities, Fluent could own the space where all three work together.
The opportunity wasn't to position Fluent around any one of these attributes. The differentiation was in the balance between all three.
TURNING PRODUCT DETAILS INTO REASONS TO CHOOSE
Beautiful products still need a reason to be specified. My approach is to dig into the details of each luminaire and ask what they actually mean to the designer.

result.
The new positioning and messaging created a clearer foundation for how Fluent communicates both its individual products and the larger brand, connecting product features to meaningful designer benefits through a consistent focus on Comfort. Performance. Aesthetics.
That strategy has been translated across product launches, social campaigns, sales communication, application imagery, and ongoing brand development, giving each luminaire a distinct product story while maintaining a consistent reason to choose Fluent.
More importantly, the work is beginning to translate into commercial traction. Since establishing the messaging direction, Fluent has begun receiving RFQs, product specifications, and orders—moving the brand beyond awareness and into active consideration and purchase.
For an emerging company building recognition in an established architectural lighting market, that progression matters. Designers aren't simply seeing Fluent, they're beginning to specify and buy it.
The goal wasn't simply to make Fluent look established. It was to give designers a reason to choose it.
